In Calgary and the surrounding area, many young people face significant challenges that threaten to derail their potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area (BBBS) steps in to provide a lifeline, offering life-changing mentoring relationships that ignite hope and resilience.
Addressing Complex Needs
The young people served by BBBS often grapple with multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Bullying, mental health issues at home, social isolation, and financial stress are just some of the burdens they carry. In 2024, 76% of community program mentees reported experiencing four or more adversities, with many disclosing ten or more. Mentoring provides a crucial source of support and helps these individuals develop the strength to overcome these obstacles.
The Power of Connection
At the core of BBBS’s work is the development of relationships between mentors and mentees. These relationships are founded on trust, care, and empowerment, leading to positive improvements in areas such as:
- Increased academic growth and learning
- Improved social and emotional skills
- Greater self-confidence and resilience
- Reduced engagement in high-risk behaviours
Stepping Up
BBBS cannot do this work alone. Community partnerships are essential to providing the resources and support needed to reach more young people. Local companies play a vital role in this effort.
Scovan’s recent donation of 1,000 pairs of socks exemplifies this support. This donation directly benefits families facing financial hardship, recognizing that 40% of BBBS families have a household income of $30,000 or less, and 66% have a household income of $50,000 or less.
Join the Movement
Investing in mentoring is an investment in the future. The Boston Consulting Group found that for every $1 invested in BBBS mentoring, $23 is returned to society.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area calls on individuals and businesses to become part of the solution. Whether you choose to volunteer as a mentor or offer financial support, everyone can play a role in unlocking the potential of young people and creating a stronger community. We are grateful for partners big and small, such as Scovan, who help BBBS achieve our vision.
