The Tech
Hydrostor is the world’s leading developer of Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) projects, enabling the transition to a cleaner, more affordable and more flexible electricity grid.
Using only water and pressurized air, A-CAES integrates proven technologies and construction approaches in innovative ways to produce a superior long-duration grid-scale energy storage solution. The cost-effective energy storage solution can be flexibly sited at locations of high grid need to deliver hundreds of megawatts and 4 to 24+ hours of storage.
Application
A-CAES provides grid services that are not readily replicated by other storage technologies, enabling the direct replacement of fossil generation, deferral of costly transmission investments and greater integration of renewable generation as the grid decarbonizes.
The Project
Hydrostor Goderich A-CAES Facility
Scovan provided owners engineering, design support and technical expertise for the Goderich A-CAES Facility, located in Goderich, Ontario, Canada. The facility is the world’s first commercially contracted Advanced-CAES facility. The plant is contracted by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for peaking capacity, ancillary services, and full participation in the merchant energy market to support grid reliability. Entirely fuel-free, the plant produces zero greenhouse gas emissions, and helps enable a cleaner, more affordable, and more flexible electricity grid.
Location: Goderich, Ontario, Canada
Capacity/Energy: 1.75 MW (discharge), 2.20 MW (charge), More than 10 MWh (contracted to 7 MWh)
Owner: Hydrostor/NRStor, contracted by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)
