U.S. President-elect, Joe Biden has stated his administrations commitment to lowering carbon emissions as part of his Presidential campaign and one of those promises is to revoke the permit on the U.S.-Canada cross border Keystone XL pipeline.
The 2,735 Kilometer Keystone XL pipeline, built by TC Energy, will carry approximately 800,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta to the Texas Gulf Coast and is essential in getting clean, ethical oil from Canada to worldwide markets.
As the inauguration of the Biden-Harris administration looms, many are feeling anxious over the Biden commitment to revoke the Keystone XL presidential permit which has allowed the $8 billion pipeline to successfully operate up to this point. Many Canadians and Canadian producers are looking to the Canadian Government to stand up and back this project.

Justin Trudeau at news briefing from Rideau Cottage
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given remarks on this very stance at a news briefing from his home at Rideau Cottage on January 19th. Trudeau said “We’ve had a clear and consistent position supporting this project for years. Our government is making sure that Canada’s views are heard and considered by the incoming administration at the highest levels,” during the briefing.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenny has also brought light to this issue and has spoken to the Trudeau government about their required backing of this pipeline. Kenny has said that he will be seeking legal damages if the project is scrapped, as reported by the CBC.
After speaking with Kenny, Trudeau was asked by reporters if his government would support such legal actions and he said he has full support for the Keystone XL pipeline.
“We understand, of course, that it is a commitment that the candidate Joe Biden made to cancel this pipeline. At the same time, we continue to demonstrate the leadership Canada has shown in fighting climate change,” Trudeau said at a press briefing. He also stated that “We’re going to continue to make that case and I look forward to speaking with President Biden in the coming days.”
With the backing of the Trudeau government, the continued cheerleading of this pipeline by Alberta Premier Jason Kenny and the financial interest of major stakeholders such as TC Energy we have a positive outlook that this pipeline will be completed and in operation as originally planned.
